The US' renewable energy potential

I've been looking for these numbers for a while. I wanted to see if the United States' eco-friendly energy trend (solar, wind power and such) was for real or if it was just (or mainly) media hype.

Well, it turns out renewable energy sources are used in the US energy production pool but it's not enough. These numbers will help you get a better idea of how the much acclaimed renewable energy alternatives are doing against the massive established base of non-renewable energy sources.

What these numbers tell us

• The trend, since 2001, is very clear: the US is producing more energy every year. From 848,254 Mw in 2001, it has grown to 978,020 in 2005. A 15,29% growth in just a few years is considerable but the real news is that the non-renewable energy is growing much faster, at 16,74%, than the cleaner "renewable" energy sources, at a measly 3,88%.
  
  
• That means that despite the "green hype", the non-renewable energy sources have been dwarfing (in sheer growth, between 2001 and 2005) the renewable energies by a whopping factor of 4,31. That means the "green message" isn't getting through to the political class.
  
  
• Conventional hydroelectric is a wonderful renewable source of energy but between 2001 and 2005, it has actually gone down 1,74%. Considerable efforts need to be invested in this clean energy source as it represented 72,59% of all the renewable energy produced, in 2005.
  
  
• The most spectacular growth in the renewable energy field has come from wind power, with a solid 125,31% growth. Perhaps wind turbine innovations such as Magenn's Power Air Rotor System will help consolidate this growth in the years to come.
